Raising Smiles And Funds For Comic Relief
March 18th has been set for this year’s Comic Relief Day, so if you plan on doing a spot of fundraising or would like to try an organise an event for this year, now’s never too soon to start sketching out some details. Whatever it is you plan on doing, there’s a number of things that you can do to make it memorable and elicit as many generous donations from the public as you can.
First of all, see if you can make a spectacle of the event by involving as many people as possible. As well as broadening out the range of potential sponsors from people in their immediate social circle, it’s far harder to ignore something happening when there’s a large group doing it. The second key thing is to do it in fancy dress. Twenty or thirty people doing a fun run might be confused as a jogging club, but if you are all in fancy dress then there’s no way passers-by are going to miss you. It’s one of the reasons why people stay glued to the television coverage of the London Marathon, to see what weird and outlandish fancy dress costumes people are attempting to run in.
Whatever you choose to do, whether it’s a fun-run, obstacle course or custard pie battle, opting for an ace men’s fancy dress or ladies fancy dress outfit to do it in makes the whole event an entertaining spectacle for passers-by, and coupled with some tactically-placed reminders about what the event is in aid of, this should get the pennies and pounds dropping in the collection bucket a bit faster.
A third good tip is to try and get some audience participation in the event if at all possible. Most are a bit hesitant about volunteering themselves, but again if the organisers themselves are in costumes it all seems like part of the fun and folks will generally want to include themselves if people genuinely seem to be having a good time. By including the audience you get them to really support the event and bring more of their friends along to watch into the bargain. Happy fundraising!
