How to Make a Homemade Child Mermaid Costume – Simple Advice From an Expert Designer

Among young girls there is a craze going on for child mermaid costumes, when Halloween period is approaching. Blue, green, pink, jade, purple and all the other colors of the rainbow decorate the window shops of costume rentals and sellers. If your daughter desperately clings to the idea of wearing a child mermaid costume this year, while you are on a tight budget, you can design one yourself.

You do not need designer skills in order to crate a beautiful mermaid dress for your daughter, so you do not have to panic. Plus, it will be a wonderful feeling to know that your daughter will become a true princess thanks to your skillful hands. You can invite her as well to give her opinion along the process, so the two of you can make a team and create something truly nice.

You will need a full-length aerial dress of a joyful color. You can choose between electric blue, and any shades of green. Then, start drawing on the dress with a marker seashell patterns, flowers, a seahorse, and other such items that remind you of an underworld kingdom.

Then, you should have at hand a lot of sequin beads of all the colors. You can start filling in the patterns you have just drawn with this sparkling little beads. If the dress is of an electric bluer color for example, you can fill in one flower with white beads, the other with pink, the next with dark green and so on.

You will notice how the child mermaid costume comes to life and literally sparkles with joy. You can also take a piece of fabric of metallic colors (such as deep purple for example), and you can start designing petite flowers which you will attach along the waistline and at the shoulder.

You will also need a material such as organza. This is a lightweight material, sheer and transparent, which you will use to create the sleeves. A child mermaid costume looks very well with some long fluttering sleeves. Before you actually sew the sleeves to the dress, you should pin it to the dress with needles, in order to see how it will look like. You can always make changes while it is not sewed yet.

Keep the sleeves large, but not longer than the wrist line, otherwise these will prevent your daughter from feeling comfortable. A little accessory here and there, a hairpin to which you can attach some nicely colored ribbons, will help you create the most wonderful sea princess.
